Summary

The return of convicted murderer Max Hansen to Haven brings out old secrets and rivalries while Audrey ponders the recent information she learned and is relevancy to Haven, Nathan continues investigating the mysterious cracks appearing around town, and Duke continues his own investigation on the man who will try to kill him. Max quickly stirs up members of the town with confrontations with the Chief, the Teagues, Duke, Audrey, and Nathan. Max is later mysteriously killed by one of the cracks forming around the town leading to an investigation by Nathan (who’s still upset at the secrets kept from him) and Audrey. Eventually they piece things together and realize the Chief is the one causing the cracks around Haven. When they confront him, Garland admits his problem and some of the reasons for it. Unable to control his condition any longer and knowing Audrey can’t help him the Chief use what’s left of his control to destroy himself. Devastated by the Chief’s loss Nathan drives Audrey away as she tries to tell him what’s had her distracted but soon searches her out after Reverend Driscoll makes it clear he wants to control Haven and force the Troubled from town. After Nathan reveals he can feel Audrey’s touch, she tells him she thinks she is Lucy. They agree to remain united and figure out what’s going on in Haven just as another FBI agent confronts them claiming to be Audrey Parker.

Comments and Observations

It isn’t often a television show is able to surprise me and rarely more so when it is done multiple times in a single episode. Spiral did just that and I suspect many fans were left with their jaws scraping the floor in surprise. What’s even better is the signs were there all along through the series of what was going to happen, with perhaps the surprise reveal about Nathan’s parentage. Couple that with some brilliant acting and you’ve got an awesome episode with a doozy of a cliffhanger. Brilliant.

Of course with some of the answers we did get we’re given a whole new set of even more intriguing questions:

  • Who killed the Colorado Kid? It is obvious most think it was Max Hansen but it’s not clear that it was.
  • Is Audrey truly Lucy? If so, then how did she become Audrey Parker when obviously there is another Audrey Parker.
  • Who’s going to become police chief? I expect Nathan will end up interim chief but given the Rev’s comments I think the position will be contested as a permanent position.
  • When did Garland take in Nathan and his mom given several points: Nathan doesn’t seem to remember Max or the abuse yet clearly recognizes the name when he sees the file, Duke seems to have always known Nathan as Nathan Wuornos and seems genuinely surprised that Nathan and Max share the same condition, and Max didn’t go to prison until 1985. Was Nathan to young to remember moving in with Garland or did he forget for some reason?
  • Are Vince and Dave Troubled? Or was Vicne simply a more violent man in his younger days?
  • Is Julia tied to the tattoed man?
  • Is Audrey Lucy?
  • Who is this second Adurey Parker?
