Revenant

"The conscious man is dead
And I buried him
Beneath this scar tissue
Armored skeleton

The Machine is now alive
Disensitized with open eyes
Powered by an angry mind
And is refueled by those I despise."

 Part 1

The Doctor was so engrossed in his work on the computer screen before him that
he did not notice the individual who quietly entered and stopped to consider
the man with intense blue eyes. Seeing the doctor's distraction the visitor
continued his approach until he stood alongside him and waited patiently. Were
it anyone else he would have been offended, but he allowed the doctor
liberties that he would not tolerate with anyone else given his importance in
the project.

He studied the rather nondescript human before him. Average height for the
male of his species, he carried a few extra pounds than necessary but it was
not unexpected for one with such a sedentary lifestyle.

After a moments more wait the doctor brushed his hands over his close cropped,
salt-and-pepper hair and stretched his neck in apparent fatigue. He suddenly
snapped to alert as he realized someone stood beside him and who that someone
was "Zo'or?" The doctor quickly smoothed out his wrinkled clothes nervously.
"How may I be of assistance?"

Zo'or smiled at the human politely. "I am here to see how the project is
proceeding, Doctor Abraham. You indicated that you would have some success by
now." Seeing the human swallow hard at this, he frowned. "Were your estimates
incorrect?"

Doctor Ezram Abraham smiled reassuringly at the Companion. "Things have not
proceeded as well as I had hoped."

"Please explain yourself." Zo'or ordered, annoyance flickering across his face
at the Doctor's words. "I do not have time to waste on a project that will
fail. It is a drain upon resources that cannot be accepted without sufficient
gains in return."

"It is working. It's taking a little longer than I expected. I simply hoped
that the results would have been greater than I had anticipated." Abraham
gestured to an observation window on the far side of the room. "I'll show
you."

"I do not care about what you anticipated, Doctor. Does the project meet the
requirements I specified?" Zo'or asked as he followed the human to the window.
Looking through he could see the silhouettes of three individuals sitting
against the far utilitarian gray walls of the darkened chamber.

"I think you will be pleased." Abraham said with some pride as he turned up
the chambers lighting.

Instantly the three humans, dressed in unadorned gray body suits, came to
attention and faced the window. The lighter shade of the clothing did little
to alleviate the tendency for the trio to seemingly blend into the room's
monochrome scheme. Though different in body structure, hair color and even
complexion the familial resemblance was obvious despite the variations. The
body suits left little doubt that the trio were prime examples of fitness and
health. On their right arms skrills awaited, light gently glowing now and then
from the symbiant's thorax to indicate an awareness of their surroundings.

Zo'or immediately noted the shortest and frowned. "I did not think *that* one
would survive this far into the development." He gestured to the strawberry
blond female.

Abraham smiled in a pleased manner as he looked over the woman, noting her
bright green eyes matched the intensity of the larger of the two males. "I
know you were displeased at the creation of Zeta, but obviously she is viable
if she has survived this long. Besides, having a female may prove of value in
the field."

Zo'or gave the doctor a mocking look. "The enemy that is coming does not care
for gender. They will kill humans regardless of this, Doctor. Be sure to
understand that fact."

Abraham nodded quickly and gestured to the two males that flanked the shorter
woman. One had brown hair and eyes, but the larger of the pair had strange
murky eyes that seemed to defy description and auburn hair that unsettled
Zo'or, as he considered the ever so slight genetic variations between the
three. Familiar visages and yet not. He was rather surprised at such a wide
genetic variation given the groups origin.

Though the trio stared impassively at what would appear to be their own
reflections from their perspective, Zo'or got the distinct impression that the
larger male was fully aware of what occurred behind the mirror. Those strange
eyes seemed far too aware of his surroundings. The eyes reminded him of the
earth creature called a wolf, bright, alert, and calculating. A wily predator
awaiting the proper moment to strike its prey. It was not an impression the
Taelon enjoyed experiencing, especially given the uncanny resemblance he
witnessed there.

"Alpha has progressed the farthest." Abraham gestured to the male that seemed
to unsettle Zo'or so much. "In fact he is ready for his final imperative
adjustment and physical evaluation. Tau has not progressed as well." Abraham
gestured to the other male, who in Zo'or's comparison seemed distracted and
perhaps not of great cunning, not that it mattered for their intended purpose.
"He still seems hesitant to kill despite continued efforts to remove this
trait from his personality."

Seeing the look Zo'or gave him, Abraham shrugged. "It should not be a problem.
A similar development occurred with Alpha and Chi during phase three
adjustments."

"Chi did not survive past phase four, as I recall your report stating." Zo'or
pointed out.

"Yes, but that was because Alpha killed him during testing." Abraham said,
unable to hide some pride at the fact he related, much to the Taelon's
disgust. Zo'or had seen the report on that particular incident and had been
more than a little disturbed by the amount of brutality that had been evident.
Despite his misgivings he had allowed the project to continue. After all, he
could hardly condemn these creatures for living up to the very purpose for
which they had been created.

"I assume you have eliminated this unfortunate tendency in Alpha?" Zo'or
asked, his eyes drifting back to the unsettling being. He could not help but
feel a mixture of pride and trepidation as the human's eyes shifted ever so
slightly to meet his gaze through the mirrored glass. Zo'or quickly looked
away, dismissing what had happened as his own imagination. "That makes four of
his own siblings he has killed."

"He only killed those he deemed weak or unable to complete the program."
Abraham protested.

Zo'or waved the scientists words aside in contempt. "Proceed with your
report."

Abraham nodded. "Zeta has progressed as expected. She has surprised me with
her ability to hold her own, even against Alpha."

"Explain." Zo'or asked curiously studying the female, comparing her physical
form with the obviously stronger male. How she could have held her own was
beyond his understanding given what the Taelon's had learned about humanity,
but he allowed the Doctor to try and explain the obvious anomaly.

"Alpha is obviously stronger, but Zeta has a four percent higher stamina rate.
Alpha is a better fighter, but it is Zeta who is the better thinker and
planner." Abraham explained quickly.

"So they balance their weaknesses with their strengths." Zo'or stated, not
quite sure he could accept such a simple answer.

"Yes," Abraham agreed, hesitantly. "Although, I believe it may be a matter of
determination at times."

"What do you mean?" Zo'or asked.

"Alpha is extremely strong willed. All of them are. But I believe Zeta is
willing to go farther because she knows she is not as physically strong as the
others. She knows she will always be at a disadvantage and uses this knowledge
in deciding her actions. Alpha knows he is the strongest and has in several
occasions become careless as a result." Abraham explained.

"I assumed this tendency has been eliminated from Alpha?" Zo'or stated.

"There was no need." Abraham replied. "He realized this error on his own and
expunged the tendency from himself."

Zo'or eyes the two in question critically, comparing what he saw in one with
the other. "How would they fare against one another? Or in an operation?"
Zo'or asked, studying the two carefully. "The result would be negligible. The strengths of each one balance the weaknesses. They are virtually identical." The Doctor enthused, excited and pleased by his work. "I should think that was obvious, Doctor." Zo'or stated, bluntly deflating some of the enthusiasm from Abraham. "Would you care for a demonstration?" Abraham asked. Receiving a silent nod Abraham pushed a button on the nearby wall before returning to Zo'or holding a device Zo'or recognized all too well from Project Earth Defense. "Alpha and Zeta, stand down. Tau, prepare yourself." Instantly the trio broke up, Alpha and Zeta taking up stations along the far wall as Tau placed himself in the center of the room. Mere moments later four human males entered wearing the gray clothing used by those 'recruited' into Project Earth Defense. None bore any marks to indicate they had been implanted. "These men were predetermined genetically resistant to the implants used in Project Earth Defense. I had them diverted to the research center here for training purposes." Abraham explained before the Companion could inquire to the human's presence. Zo'or allowed a small smile to cross his face in approval of Abraham's unwillingness to allow potential opportunity to be wasted. "Do you understand why you are here?" Abraham called through the speaker. The four men looked at one another, before a black haired one smiled cruelly. When he spoke it was with a thick Slavic accent, perhaps Russian. Zo'or could not be sure, nor did he care. If all went as he anticipated, their origin would be irrelevant. "Da. We kill him and you let us go free. Correct?" "Of course." Abraham replied reassuringly. He awaited Zo'or's nod before speaking again. "Begin." Zo'or watched with interest as Tau instantly struck out, downing two of his surprised foes in mere moments leaving them gasping and moaning in agony. The black haired man swung crudely, only to have his punch blocked easily. He gagged as Tau grasped him by his throat lifting him off the floor. A second later an audible snapping sound could be heard. Tau tossed aside the now lifeless body, taking a strong blow to the face from the remaining man that caused him to stagger back a few steps. Tau touched the area he had been struck, a deep frown crossing his face. Emboldened the fourth man launched himself at his opponent, only to die an instant later as Tau's palm slammed into his nose, shoving bone shards into his brain as the force of the impact nearly shattered the man's face. Tau turned to the two surviving humans and stared at them impassively. Fear was obvious in their eyes. One even attempted to crawl to the door that had brought them into the room. Tau merely cocked his head sideways as if curious to their behavior. An oddly childlike gesture given that two of their number were dead at his hands. "Tau, eliminate the opposition." Abraham ordered, impatiently. Instantly the implant complied bringing his right arm out and firing two shots rapidly from his skrill. The room lit up as two bright discharges illuminated the bodies of the men as it killed them. Tau took a step towards the bodies observing for a moment before returning his attention to the mirrored wall. Alpha and Zeta quickly flanked him. "Targets eliminated." He reported in a gravely voice. "He hesitated." Zo'or stated. "As I said. It is a regrettable flaw that should be eliminated shortly." Abraham said. "And how can I be certain the others do not have this, as you so quaintly put it, flaw?" Zo'or asked. Abraham gave the Taelon a long look that Zo'or found himself unable to comprehend. A moment later Abraham opened the microphone to the room. "Alpha, terminate Tau." Zo'or's eyes widened in shock as he turned his eyes back to the room. In an instant Alpha, standing to the left of Tau raised his right arm and fired his skrill. Alpha glanced once to his left as the body slumped to the floor before returning his emotionless gaze to the wall. "Termination complete." Zo'or simply stared, surprised and sickened, at both the Doctor's actions and with the apparent ease Alpha had willing killed his fellow implant. He looked at the Doctor, completely flabbergasted to see a broad grin on the human's features. "I trust this demonstration was enough to satisfy your concerns?" Abraham asked, not even a hint of remorse upon the human's face. Zo'or considered the Doctor for a moment, before returning his eyes to the room. After a moment, he nodded. "Yes, Doctor. I am quite satisfied." He returned his gaze to the Doctor, who was still smiling. "Prepare the Revenant. He has his first mission." "Revenant?" Abraham asked in confusion. Zo'or silently gestured to Alpha. "It seems a most appropriate name does it not, Doctor?" Zo'or asked with a humorless grin. "Especially given your colleagues success with Lazarus." He eyed the doctor out of the corner of his eye. "Let us hope you have had far better success." "But Lazarus was an entirely different project! Project Bellator is not only different, but far more complex!" Abraham protested. Zo'or stared at the human, his displeasure obvious. "You will prepare Revenant for his first assignment. Now." Abraham swallowed hard at the calmly spoken words "But Zo'or! They are not ready. There is still the final evaluation before they can be released to Project Earth Defense." Abraham said trying to hide his shock at Zo'or's actions. "What gave you any indication that I was placing him within the ranks of that project?" Zo'or asked with a contemptuous smile. "You want to use them personally?" Abraham asked, his eyebrows raising in surprise. "They must be tested somewhere. I see no reason why it should not be for me." Zo'or said. "If he can accomplish the tasks I set for him, then I will know with full certainty that Project Bellator is viable. Even Da'an and his supporters would have no valid argument against me when this Project is unveiled to the Synod." Abraham gaped at this admission. "But any number of things could go wrong if he isn't properly prepared." "Then I shall personally oversee Revenant's final orders." Zo'or stated, refusing to allow a mere human to dissuade him from his set plans. Abraham opened his mouth to protest but stopped seeing the considering look the Taelon gave the Doctor's prized implant. He was tempted to tell the Synod leader the slight alterations he had made to the Bellator Project, but at the last moment decided against it reasoning he could explain it away after Revenant had successfully completed the mission. By then his dream of an improved human would be a reality and the Companions would have the warrior they needed to defeat the coming enemy. He gestured slowly to the door, a slight smile crossing his face. "Then perhaps you would like to meet ..Al...that is, the Revenant, personally." "Proceed." The Taelon directed with a gesture. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Part 2 Major Liam Kincaid's long strides quickly ate up the length of the incline to Da'an's chamber as he hurried his pace. Entering the chamber he was slightly surprised to see Ronald Sandoval, personal attaché to the Synod Leader Zo'or, standing before Da'an with a foreboding look upon his face. Next to him stood Lili Marquette, giving annoyed looks at Sandoval. Seeing Liam, Da'an rose from his chair and gestured. "Major Kincaid." He greeted, formally. Liam could tell by the tone Da'an was not pleased by his tardiness. "Sorry, I'm late." Liam said apologetically. He brushed a hand over his hair to smooth it out noting Sandoval's frown seemed to blend perfectly with the dark, somber suit the implant wore today. Sandoval flicked open a pocket watch seeming to note the time before closing the cover and returning it to his coat pocket. "Please, Agent Sandoval, proceed with your report." Da'an instructed, cutting off any attempt by the implant to chastise the North American Companion's new protector. Da'an was quite well aware of Sandoval's disapproval of Kincaid not being an implant. Knowing Liam's true nature, Da'an did little to encourage those into believing he desired his current protector to be given a CVI. Were the truth to be known about his protector, the results could prove disastrous for all involved. The Taelon's almost irrational fear of anything related to the Kimera was known all too well by Da'an. Ronald Sandoval shot Liam a warning look but returned his attention to Da'an. "There has been a noted increase in criminal activities against Companion interests worldwide in the past month. Several of the incidents involved the death or injury of key Companion personnel." "Is there a pattern to these activities?" Da'an asked with obvious concern. "None that has been determined, as of yet." Sandoval replied with some frustration. He glanced at Liam for a moment as if hesitant to speak further. After a moment he returned his gaze to the awaiting Companion. "No disrespect to Major Kincaid, but Companion Security effectiveness in North America seems to have lapsed since the death of Commander Boone." Liam frowned at this, but held back his first response seeing the look both Da'an and Lili gave him. Though it irked him to be compared to Da'an's previous protector, he allowed the obvious barb to pass. Boone had been a rather popular, not mention effective, leader of the security teams. Even Da'an spoke highly of his deceased Head of Security. Liam knew this well from the records and so remained silent on that matter. "Perhaps the security protocols laid down by my predecessor were not followed correctly. A recent break in at a lab in New York was attributed to such failure." Liam offered instead. The lack of arrogance in his response seemed to surprise Sandoval, who Liam admitted had been on the receiving end of such retorts many times. Perhaps too many times. "That was already considered, Major. In the twenty-two incidents that have occurred, only two showed violations of security protocols." Sandoval replied. "Twenty-two security violations? How is it that this has not come to our attention until now?" Da'an asked clearly concern by information, fixing a pointed stare upon the implant. Sandoval swallowed nervously. "We were unaware of any correlation between the incident until the monthly reports were compiled." "Agent Sandoval, I believe Commander Boone specified to the security teams that world wide security reports were to be compiled weekly. When did that procedure change?" Liam asked, caustically. He admittedly felt some small pleasure in watching the implant's obvious discomfort, though he knew he should not as Sandoval had no control over the matter. "It was deemed as too inefficient and time consuming by some of the Companions in other countries and fell into disuse." Sandoval replied, his tone indicating his own displeasure with the change in procedure. "The protocol shall be re-instituted immediately with in my sphere of influence." Da'an stated. "Such complacency has brought us to our current situation. I will not allow it to proceed unchecked." Sandoval and Kincaid nodded in unison at this directive, unknowingly mimicking each other's actions. Seemingly satisfied at the reactions he received, Da'an gestured towards Sandoval. "Please continue with your report." Sandoval nodded, feeling pleased to be serving Da'an again, even for such a brief moment as this. He had almost forgotten how simple and efficient Da'an went about his tasks. It was quite a refreshing change of pace from his current position with its dizzying array of dark secrets and even darker projects. "The majority of attacks have been upon research centers. Several pieces of technology have been stolen and numerous files accessed." "Accessed? But not stolen?" Lili interrupted, suddenly very interested in Sandoval's words. "No. As far as can be determined the files were not copied. Merely viewed." Sandoval replied, causing Lili to look away thoughtfully. She knew of only one person capable of such a feat. But that begged the question of why Augur would bother to do such a thing? She knew all too well his interests were more mercenary in nature. She glanced at Liam only to see her own thoughts mirrored in his concerned expression. "What sort of technology has been stolen?" Liam asked, as he refocused his attention on Sandoval. Sandoval accessed his CVI for a moment before answering. "Interdimensional portal technology, experimental virtual shield emitters, high energy weapons components, experimental communications equipment, holographic systems, and numerous other electronic equipment." He settled his gaze on Da'an as he continued. "The information accessed included subjects related to these items, as well as bacteriological and biohazardous agents, genetics, some advanced physics based upon Taelon research, munitions, and information regarding Companion facilities world wide." Lili's eyes widened at this information for it confirmed that it could not possibly be of Augurs doing. Or at least not his choice. Her thoughts drifted to another with a greater interest in Companion technology and weapons systems. 'But even Jonathan wouldn't do something like this! Or would he?' She wondered to herself. Da'an blinked slowly at this information before gesturing to Sandoval. "What is the assessment of these attacks?" "We believe it is a coordinated operation by the Liberation to access Taelon resources and technology in possible prelude to a major attack upon prominent Companions world wide." Sandoval replied neutrally. Da'an shook his head slowly in disagreement. "No. I do not believe the Liberation would do such a thing. They have nothing but enmity to gain from such an endeavor." "Perhaps Doors is desperate." Sandoval supplied half-heartedly. He and Boone had played cat-and-mouse with the Liberation enough times that he knew this wasn't the Liberation in action. At least not the American branch of the organization. No. This was something else...or someone else. Of this he was certain. "I doubt such is the case." Da'an cast a long look at the Asian implant that made him want to squirm in discomfort. Sandoval knew Da'an had seen through his facade to his own belief. But his beliefs made little effective use in the face of Companion authority. He straightened himself and proceeded as was expected of him. "Three prominent human scientists have been killed, Da'an. A geneticist, a physicist and a microbiologist." Sandoval noted. "You can now see why I believe we do have cause for concern." "Yes, Agent Sandoval. Such news is troubling." Da'an agreed. "But I sense that we do not have the entire situation in hand." "What do you mean?" Sandoval asked in confusion at the Companion's words. "It is not important." Da'an said dissuasively. "Increase security at all facilities in North America and continue the investigation. I trust that Captain Marquette is available to assist Major Kincaid in this endeavor?" Da'an asked. "Of course." Ron replied. He noted with some small amusement that Captain Marquette seemed both relieved and apprehensive by Da'an's request. He was certain her apprehension was more in regard to Zo'or's reaction than his own. He suspected her relief was for being able to be away from him for a time. He was fully aware that the working relationship between the Captain and himself had been strained, at best, since Boone's death. He had tried, without much positive result, to attain a more understanding attitude but they still clashed often enough for him to know Lili Marquette did not trust him despite all their years of service to the Companions. He regretted this unfortunate situation but knew there was little that could be done to change it. Da'an gestured dismissively to the implant. "Then please inform Zo'or all steps necessary will be taken to prevent any such future activities in North America." Da'an instructed. Sandoval nodded, almost bowing his head, before taking his leave of the chamber. Alone now from Sandoval's presence, Da'an looked at the two humans before him with a questioning gaze. "Your assessments?" Lili glanced at Liam before flicking her eyes back to Da'an. "It wasn't Liberation. That I am certain of." Lili stated. "As am I." Da'an agreed as he sat gracefully in his chair. "And that's why you are concerned?" Liam asked. "Yes." Da'an acknowledged. "We can ill afford another resistance group. Particularly one that by all appearances is intent upon provoking an incident that will allow Zo'or to convince the Synod that his plan for humanity is the only viable option for the Taelons." "Do you think Zo'or is behind this?" Lili asked. "Perhaps." Da'an said. The doubting tone of his voice clearly stated his apprehension at such a statement. "Perhaps not. This does not seem to fit within Zo'or's behavior but must be considered a possibility given his recent actions. The loss of valuable technology and personnel is far too wasteful for such an endeavor that would result in such paltry gains" "Unless that's precisely why he's doing it." Liam noted. "Do you have a suggestion as to who is the perpetrator of these attacks?" Da'an asked. Liam merely shook is head, apologetically. "I think we might be able to find out." Lili stated suddenly. "Please explain, Captain." Da'an instructed gently. "Who ever hacked into the Companion computer systems knew those systems well enough to get in without setting off any security protocols, but were not able to cover the trail they left." Lili said. "Or chose to leave to throw Companion security off." Liam interjected with a small knowing smile. "Exactly." Lili nodded. "Either they purposely left a trail, or had just enough ability to hack into the system. There aren't too many that can do that in either case." "I am in agreement with this assessment, Captain." Da'an spoke, gesturing with mild agitation. "How do you suggest we proceed?" "I'll contact Augur. He'll either know who it is or will know where to look." Lili replied. "Very well. Proceed at your own discretion, Captain." Da'an cautioned. "Be aware of the possible ramifications should these attacks continue unabated." "I am, Da'an." Lili nodded. "Maybe Augur will even be able to help us pinpoint a common thread in these attacks." She headed down the ramp. "Captain." She stopped and looked back at Da'an's call. "Be careful. Both of you." He glanced at Liam. "We do not know where this may lead. The answers could prove to be unfortunate." "We'll be careful, Da'an." Liam assured the Companion confidently. "And we'll get the answers." With that the pair left Da'an alone. "I fear that you are all too correct in this." Da'an said quietly to himself. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Part 3 Lili Marquette coughed slightly as the chill wind blew a strong whiff of acrid smoke.
The accompanying smell was one that she greatly wished she would never experience
again. Thoughts of the carnage she had witnessed during the War passed through her
head. She heard Liam say something. She quickly pushed the memories aside and
concentrated on the business on hand, which wasn't much more pleasant than her
troubled thoughts. "What was that?" She asked, brushing an errant lock of brown hair behind her ear. Liam looked at her oddly for a moment before shrugging. "The police are certain a
bomb was used in this attack, but haven't been able to determine how it was delivered.
Any ideas?" Liam gestured to the gaping hole in the parking garage they stood outside of. "Can't really tell from out here, but it was relatively small given the damage. And well timed.
Only the victim was killed which means somebody knew what they were doing. I doubt this
wasn't a quick revenge bombing but we better take a closer look inside to be sure." Lili
replied, stepping carefully through the blasted concrete wall, noting the scoring and
fragmentation as she did so. Explosives hadn't been her specialty in the Corps, but she had
had enough experience from the War to be pretty certain her assessment had been correct
so far. "The explosives experts say they found residue in the initial analysis. It appears to be
military grade plastique." Liam noted as he followed her into the charred hole. "Makes sense. It's stable, making it easy to transport and equally easy to adjust to your
needs." Lili nodded. "So we're not talking a run of the mill bombing, then." Liam noted. Lili stopped at the site before her, unwelcome memories from the War coming to mind at
what she saw before her. She swallowed hard, feeling her stomach churn at the all too
familiar and horrifying stench of burnt flesh. "No, we're not." She murmured softly. "You all right, Lili?" Liam asked, putting a comforting hand on her shoulder. Concern was
plainly evident on his face. Lili jerked slightly at the touch, drawing her eyes from the scene before them to Liam. She
smiled wanly. "Yeah. Sure." She shrugged off the hand and continued on. Liam stared after
her a moment before silently following. Two men wearing coroner's office uniforms were hoisting a body bag unto a stretcher as Lili
passed. She tried as best she could not to notice the relatively small size of the body bag,
not wishing to dwell upon what that fact represented. A few feet beyond them she stopped and stared at what had once been an automobile, the
remains of which were twisted and blackened by the fury of the device that had destroyed the
vehicle and its occupant. The only reason she could tell it had been a vehicle was the presence
of two half-melted tires and part of the drive shaft. The rest of the vehicle was amongst the
scattered debris on the floor or simply no longer existed. She could barely discern the frame of the car in the wreckage. The driver's compartment no
longer existed on the vehicle. It was now just a mass of twisted metal and melted polymers
charred beyond any visible recognition as to its purpose. She simply shook her head in shock, still amazed despite all her experiences, at the
destructiveness humanity was capable of. Liam came upon her seeing the slight frown that
crossed her face. He was hesitant to disturb her at first but decided the faster they finished up,
the faster they could leave. He didn't like being here. He especially didn't like the way it seemed
to shake up Lili. "So what do you think?" Liam asked, lamely looking for a way to get things underway. His words
seemed to have their desired effect, as Lili seemed to shake herself from her reverie. "Who was the victim?" She asked crisply. Liam made the pretense of flipping through his notes. "Doctor Constantin Vontsolos, former head
researcher for ComTech Lab's bioweapons division." "Former? What was he researching?" Lili asked, with a curious glance. "Skrills." Liam replied. "Skrills." Lili repeated with disbelief. "Do we know what he was doing with the skrills?" "There's nothing here in the records." Liam replied with a shake of his head. "No surprise there." She muttered to herself. "Is there a problem?" Liam asked, seeing the doubting look on her face. She shook her head. "No. It's nothing really." "Lili, I can tell something's bothering you about the Doctor's work. What is it?" Liam asked. Lili sighed. "The last time I encountered a doctor researching and testing skrills I got shot
by one. In fact, last I heard, all but one of that particular type of skrill had been destroyed.
Supposedly the research program was shutdown since the gamma series was developed." "It could be he was only researching ways to improve the gamma series." Liam offered. "Maybe." Lili allowed. "Anything else about the Doctor?" "Nothing. He quit ComTech Labs about a year ago and went to work for Doors International's
genetic research program working on some new gene therapy." Liam stated. "No enemies.
Steady and reliable researcher. Not brilliant but gifted. Model employee. No family. That's
about covers all the descriptions I was given. Everybody liked him." "Obviously somebody didn't." Lili gestured vaguely to the wreckage. Liam simply nodded a bit
unsettled by Lili's behavior. "Any ideas on what did this?" Liam asked. Lili returned her gaze to the blast site studying it carefully. Everything seemed consistent with
typical car bomb but something felt wrong about it. She stepped closer to the wreck carefully
tracing the shrapnel and collateral damage along the far wall carefully. Nothing seemed out of place. "I don't know. Something's not right here." She shook her head in frustration. "What do you mean?" Liam asked. Lili sighed in exasperation at Liam's question, tilting her head back, closing her eyes as she rubbed
her neck to knead the tense muscles. "I said I don't know. If I..." She opened her eyes and instantly
stopped surprised at what she saw. Or more precisely what she did not see. "Lili?" Liam saw her surprised expression and looked up as well. All he saw was the buildings rather
plain gray concrete. He frowned suddenly at this incongruity. "Where's the damage?" "There wouldn't be any if the charge was shaped and arranged properly." Lili replied, turning her gaze
back to the wreckage. Liam looked at his global's preliminary schematics of the bombsight and tapped in this new piece of
information. He shook his head in disbelief at what he saw. "That can't be right." "What is it?" Lili asked, accepting the global when Liam held it out to her. After a moments study,
she glanced back at the wreckage. She nodded to herself and handed the global back to Liam. "We better get back to Da'an." She stated and brushed past him in a hurry. "Lili?" Liam started, shocked by her sudden abruptness. Given no other choice he quickly
followed her out of the parking garage only to find her ordering the police officers to seal the
area under the authority of Companion Security. The officers simply nodded and went about
their task. Liam managed to snag her arm and bring her to a halt mere feet from the shuttle. Lili whirled
on him and yanked her arm from his grasp. A mixture of fear, anger and concern was clearly
seen upon her face. "Lili, what is it?" "Get in the shuttle." She ordered. "No. Not until you tell me what's going on." Liam said, becoming worried himself at Lili's
sudden behavior. He knew the former Marine Captain well enough to when something worried
her. There were not many things that could achieve such a state from her. Seeing the determined set to his jaw, Lili sighed. "It's just a hunch, but were not dealing with
some random bombing incident here." "What do you mean? Aside from the plastique, everything you said in there seemed to
indicate to just that." Liam asked in confusion. Lili glanced around them warily before leaning closer to the protector. "During the War there
was some use of chemical and biological weapons." Liam nodded slowly. "Yes. A number of civilians were killed by it." "Right." Lili continued. "But what a lot of people didn't know about was how those agents
were sometimes delivered to their targets." "Use of tactical missiles and artillery were quite common." Liam noted, practically quoting from
a textbook. Lili ignored the interruption and nodded on that point. "But another means of delivery was also used.
Not only for NBC agents, but also for standard payloads. Especially the smaller ones." "Lili, what are you talking about?" Liam asked. "In the nineties the military started to develop drones that could be programmed to find a target and
destroy it. Most of these drones were airborne or small ground based vehicles that were difficult to
detect. During the War both sides used several experimental versions of these drones. They were
small and made little noise but could carry a relatively hefty payload for their size." Lili explained
quickly. "And you think that's what happened here?" Liam asked. Lili nodded. "I've seen that type of blast pattern once before. It was during the War, Liam." She
nodded her head towards the parking garage. "What I saw in there looks nearly identical. Definitely
larger, but still the same pattern." "Wait, wait, wait." Liam said shaking his head. "How big are these drones?" "The few I saw in the War were about a meter long and half a meter wide." She answered. "The Doctor would have noticed something like that, even if it were completely silent." Liam said,
skeptically. "Not necessarily. Remember the Jaridian probe that killed Quo'on?" Lili asked, silencing the human-Kimera \hybrid instantly. "I know this is going to sound crazy, but what if it had a similar type of capability to
camouflage itself?" Liam nodded slowly as he considered her words. A part of him found the idea utterly ridiculous. The alien
part of him found it to be a brilliant idea. "They'd have to have access to Jaridian materials." He noted. "Or Taelon. The military industrial base has been linked heavily to the Companions practically since the
day they arrived." Lili pointed out. "Didn't Sandoval mention that experimental virtual shield components
were stolen?" Liam's mouth thinned into a line in concern. "We'd need to run tests to locate anything that would be
Jaridian or Taelon in the wreckage. Is that why you think we need to get back to Da'an so quickly?" "Partly." She admitted. "I also want to see the full reports on the other reported attacks as well. I'm
betting they're tied together somehow." "Let's go." Liam quickly entered the shuttle, suddenly far more worried than Lili had been. -------------------------------------- "What is the meaning of this?" Zo'or demanded of the two humans as they hurried into Da'an's
chamber. Both Lili and Liam exchanged a surprised look at Zo'or's presence but quickly
recovered. Da'an merely acknowledged them with a silent nod, gesturing to Ronald Sandoval.
Sandoval immediate stepped to the side of Da'an's chair. "We believe we've found a possible link for the recent attacks upon Companion interests." Liam
reported. "If this is so, why did you simply not call this information in?" Sandoval demanded. Liam cast a glance at Lili before returning his gaze to the implant. "Because we needed to
confirm our discovery and compare it with those of the other attacks. The files regarding those
incidents have been restricted." "And how is that Agent Kincaid has not been given clearance to these files when they are of
utmost importance to the investigation he and Captain Marquette has been assigned to?"
Da'an asked, pointedly looking at Zo'or despite the question being directed to Agent Sandoval. "I did not think the restricted section of those files would prove relevant to Agent Kincaid's
assigned duties." Sandoval replied a bit nonplused by the realization that he may have
inadvertently assisted the Taelon's adversaries. Even more disturbing to the implant was
the fact that it had been Zo'or's own orders that the files be restricted. "Remove all restrictions to Major Kincaid and Captain Marquette's access to files related to
these incidents immediately, Agent Sandoval." Zo'or ordered, his tone indicated his great
displeasure at the Agents action. "Yes, Zo'or." Sandoval replied, instantly pulling out his global and making the necessary
adjustments. Zo'or turned an eye to the two humans. "What information have you acquired in regard to
the latest bombing incident?" Lili instantly stepped forward. "There was an anomaly at the site we were inspecting that
reminded me of a similar experience I had during the S. I. War. I also seemed to recall that
there were several other bombings similar in nature to this one. I believe there maybe a
correlation between them. If our tests from the bomb site concur with those of the others
we may be able to discover who is responsible for these attacks." Zo'or seemed to consider this carefully. Over Zo'or's shoulder Lili could see Da'an smiling
slightly, obviously pleased at the possible speedy resolution of their current crisis. Zo'or
nodded once. "Excellent, Captain Marquette. I commend you and Major Kincaid. The Synod
will expect swift resolution." "Of course, Zo'or." Lili replied, a little surprised at what would be considered high praise
from the current Synod Leader. "Major Kincaid and Captain Marquette have been given complete access, Zo'or." Sandoval
reported. Zo'or acknowledged the implants announcement with a slow nod before turning to face Da'an.
He made a perfunctory gesture of acknowledgment. "I shall return to the homeship with high
expectations that this situation will be resolved satisfactorily." "It shall be as the Synod wishes." Da'an replied formally, returning the gesture. With that
Zo'or and Sandoval quickly departed. For several long minutes the trio remained silent and unmoving. Only when the final echoes
of Zo'or's shuttles entrance into interdimensional had faded did Da'an suddenly rise. "What
else do you know?" He asked without preamble. "Doctor Vontsolos was killed by a military grade explosive device, most likely a remote drone
similar to those used in certain black ops during the S.I. War." Lili instantly replied. "What causes you to believe this is the case?" Da'an asked. "The damage dispersion clearly indicated the bomb was a meter from the ground and capable
of dispersing it's payload in a controlled fashion that clearly targeted the Doctor's vehicle." Lili
replied. Da'an seemed to consider this, clearly worried. He looked from Lili to Liam and back. "You are
certain of these conclusions?" "That's why we need to see the files. We've got a theory that appears to fit the facts available."
Liam answered. "Then proceed with haste. I fear we may not have long to wait before more violence occurs
against Companion interests." Da'an stated. ---------------------------------------- Revenant closed the door to the apartment quietly, being sure to carefully secure both the
dead bolt and the sliding chain. Both were of little effective use in his opinion and certainly
were of no need given what he was capable of doing to anyone foolish enough to enter his
current domicile. There were not even biometric security scanners available for this hovel he
found himself in. Inspite of this knowledge he locked the door anyway. Not surprisingly his current domicile's other resident rose from the battered coach and
quickly turned off the television monitor. As usual he was dressed in jeans and blue fishnet
T-shirt that revealed a mixture of celtic and tribal tattoos upon his muscular arms and torso.
Also per norm green colored hair had been spiked out. The young man, perhaps all of twenty
years old, quickly pad his way over to Revenant with a piece of paper in his hand. "Two guys came by looking for you. They say you owe them money for the last shipment,
Rev." He stated, a slight cynical smile curling his lips as he spoke. "They wish more money?" Revenant asked. "When did this occur, Cael?" Cael frowned at Rev's use of his given name instead of his nickname, but let it pass. Rev did
things his own way and Cael was willing to allow the guy more leeway then he would others.
Besides, he liked having a place to stay with a roof over his head with no questions asked.
He shrugged. "Yesterday about four PM." Rev looked away for a moment, apparently considering Cael's words. Cael took the opportunity
to glance at Rev's right arm, hoping to catch a glimpse of the creature he knew was there. He'd
been fascinated with the thing ever since Rev had nearly blasted his head off with it when they
first met. Or more properly when Cael had tried to rob the place, mistakenly believing its occupant had
departed for the day. For Cael what should have been a terrifying memory was looked upon with
both amazement and humor. It was hard to believe it had only been two weeks ago. He grinned
to himself at the memory but his thoughts were quickly interrupted. "Anything else?" Revenant asked as he removed his coat and unbuttoned his right sleeve, quickly
rolling the cloth up and over his forearm. He just as quickly removed what appeared to be a light
brace engulfing the arm from the elbow to the knuckles of his hand. He could not help but feel a
small smile tug at his face as the skrill hissed once in approval. In the back of his mind the skrill
reminded him that he would need to eat soon to replenish his system and maintain the skrills
own energy. "Yeah. I followed them to this location." Cael said handing over the slip of paper to Rev with a
slight smile on his face. It seemed this guy always knew what he was thinking. Trippy stuff! Rev glanced over the paper before wading it up and tossing it into the nearby trash can. "I will take
care of it later tonight." Cael merely shrugged and went back to the couch picking up a dog-eared
book along the way. He started flipping through the pages while Revenant watched him in apparent curiosity. After a
moment, he turned his attention to more pressing matters than his own interest in these humans he
was supposed to protect from the coming enemy. They were so much more complex and interesting
than Doctor Abraham and his associates had been. Again the skrill indicated its desire for nutrition, interrupting his ruminations. Revenant ignored this
reminder. Instead he quickly crossed the room to a desk and extracted a global from its single drawer.
The operation had gone as expected and needed to be noted as such. Opening the device he placed
his thumb against a portion of the pad and waited a mere second before the global confirmed his
thumbprint. He quickly tapped in his security code and again waited for a moment before it was cleared
and information scrolled across the screen. He reviewed the text quickly making a minor notation on the list before him. He was more than pleased
to see that more than half his assigned mission had been accomplished in half the time allotted to him.
He scanned the rest of the information selecting the next name on his list. Clark, Lawrence Dr. He picked the name and in seconds scanned through all available information he had on the subject.
When exhausted he activated his link to the global communications network. In minutes he was hacked
into the Taelon network. He paused momentarily as he read the Companion Security report filed regarding
the Doctors theft of a skrill, mildly surprised that the Doctor would consider such a thing. Something had to
be missing from the report. He was certain of this as he continued on with his research. Several minutes
later, he smiled to himself and closed his global. He glanced over to the nightstand by his bed, his eyes quickly taking inventory of the few items that lay
there. With that he placed the global on his belt and padded lightly over to the kitchenette to prepare his meal.
Nodding his approval he gently massaged the skrill without even thinking about it. He would personally attend
to this one himself. He would not even need to risk going to his cache to carry out this assignment. "Would you like something to eat Cael?" He asked suddenly. He wasn't as surprised by these sudden bursts
of concern for others as he had been when the assignment first started. It had become a more frequent
behavior when he was around Cael. 'Perhaps this is what humans call friendship?' He wondered. There was much that confused him since his task
had been assigned. This was just another, albeit far less concerning than some he had. "Naw, but thanks man. I ate earlier." Came the bored reply. Revenant simply shrugged to himself in acceptance.
Cael only rarely accepted offers of generosity from anyone. He closed his eyes for a moment as an image entered his thoughts. Another meal in another time. It
quickly passed as fleeting as a dream leaving him disoriented for a moment. As usual he paid it no
attention as he had been instructed in the past. He opened his eyes and shrugged to himself,
continuing to prepare his meal. ---------------------------------------- "Nothing. There's enough of a correlation between attacks to give us at least something to start on
but we've got nothing. No matches at all. It doesn't make sense!" Lili muttered in frustration to
Liam and Augur. She glanced over at the hacker busily tapping away at his keyboard with an intent
look upon his face as he worked. He was dressed in a relatively sedate shirt of swirling psychedelic
patterns reminiscent of tie-dyed shirt of the sixties and rather plain black pants. "How can you
stand to do this?" She asked. Liam and Lili had come to Augur two hours ago after getting nowhere in their search of the
Companion security databases. Using the pretext of following a lead they had left the embassy.
Both knew Da'an wasn't fooled and were actually grateful the Companion seemed quite content
to allow them to use Liberation resources to resolve the situation. Lili had to admit Liam had been correct in introducing Da'an to the Liberation. It freed them from
a lot of worry over whether they would inadvertently be discovered by the North American Companion. Augur merely cracked a small smile at Lili from his own computer terminal at her obvious irritation
and continued working. He was smart enough to know when to keep his mouth shut. Liam
apparently wasn't. "Augur's a hacker, Lili." If Liam had stopped there Augur would have let the comment slide.
Lili would put the kid in his place. Unfortunately Liam still had a lot to learn about when to quit
when he's ahead. "It's his job. Besides its not like he's got a life of his own." Augur snorted loudly in derision "So what have you found, our little wunderkind?" Liam's smirk was erased by the question. He looked at his own screen blankly before
shrugging. "Nothing." "Uh huh. Just as I thought." Augur mocked turning back to his own work after sparing a
chastened Liam a glance. Liam looked at Lili, who was trying very hard to hide her smile, to his own computer screen
and then back to Augur again. He sighed. "You know Lili's right. How do you put up with this?" "Ah!" Augur clapped his hands together and smiled. "You found something?" Lili asked, instantly at Augur's side to see what he found. Liam
joined them a moment later. "I believe we've found the source of your problem." He stated seriously, gesturing to the
screen. "That's not possible." Lili stated. "Someone on the Taelon homeship is doing this?" "No. Someone is accessing global information networks via the homeship. That's as far
back as I can trace it without tipping off the Taelon security systems that I'm nosing around
their databases." Augur said with admiration. "Who ever did this is good. Very good." "I wouldn't go setting up a fan club for this person. He's killing people." Lili said. Augur looked hurt at her statement but said nothing more on that matter. Lili had been rather
moody all day. He wondered what about this assignment had her on edge. Instead he brought
up the information he found. "OK. Here's a list of the recent attacks. And over here is the list
of file accesses. Check the time stamps." "The files were accessed anywhere from twenty-four hours to forty-eight hours before the
attacks occurred." Liam stated in surprise. "Exactly." Augur noted. "That means there's got to be several people involved in these attacks. It's too well organized."
Lili said. "Can whoever is accessing these files discover your trace on them?" Liam asked. Augur shook his head. "No. Whoever did this is good, but is almost as restricted as I am. They're
able to cover themselves from the Taelons but were unable to completely cover their tracks." "Only Companion protectors would have such access." Liam noted with concern. "Or a Taelon Synod member." Lili added. "Have any new files been accessed as far as you can tell?" Liam asked. "Maybe we'll be able to
catch them at their own game." "On it already." Augur replied. A few moments later information scrolled across the screen. "Clark,
Doctor Lawrence. Was accessed two hours ago from a double blind terminal routed through the
Taelon homeship." Augur noted. "Great." Lili muttered to herself. "What's wrong?" Liam asked. "Nothing. We better tell Da'an where we're headed and we'll need a security team." Lili said
dragging Liam by the arm from Augurs place. "You're welcome." Augur said to the suddenly empty room. ---------------------------------------- Revenant slowly trailed his target through the mall, leisurely stopping at an occasional shop
window making the pretense of considering what was available. Dressed plainly and wearing
a cap to cover his hair, he kept a low profile. Just another nameless, faceless shopper among
many other shoppers more worthy of notice. He had even bothered to buy a book to make his
appearance believable. He could tell the Doctor was nervous. And rightly so given that Revenant had spotted four
separate individuals whose behavior and unusual interest in the Doctor's actions indicated they
were there to protect him. Companion security he guessed. Someone had obviously discovered
his intended target. How they had done so would be dealt with later. For now he was focused
on eliminating the Doctor. Seeing the Doctor stop he settled onto a nearby vacated bench and pulled the book from his
bag and began to page through it, eyeing the Doctor over the top. After a few moments a tall,
brown haired man approached him. The Doctor seemed suddenly relieved by the others words. 'Kincaid, Liam. Major. Protector to the North American Companion.' His CVI informed him. He
mentally perused the file on Kincaid, noting with surprise he had not been implanted with a CVI.
'Odd.' He thought to himself. All other protectors had the requisite CVI and skrill. Obviously this
Kincaid needed more investigating. Seeing the four other security personnel converge on the Doctor and Kincaid's position, Revenant
rose from the bench and quickly placed the book into his coat's inner pocket. The Doctor and his
entourage started towards a known exit point. Revenant calculated the quickest route to his new destination in seconds. He turned only to
collide with another person. Without even realizing it he reached out and steadied the person.
"Are you all right?" He asked, momentarily wondering at why he even inquired. "Yeah, yeah. I'm OK. Sorry." Came the reply from a brown haired woman, smiling apologetically. The instant their eyes met, Revenant felt a jolt of recognition. 'Lili.' He merely blinked in surprise
at a rush of mixed feelings he had. In an instant they passed and he studied her more intently.
She could see confusion and surprised disbelief on her face as his CVI identified her. Marquette, Lili Denner. Captain. "Excuse me." Revenant said and quickly brushed passed her without a backward glance. He
stopped, resisting the urge to strike out when she grabbed his arm. He slowly turned to her
with a curious expression. She seemed flustered for a moment during which he cast a pointed
look at her hand on his right arm. She quickly released it, realizing it was encased in some sort
of brace from the wrist to elbow, and backed up a step. "I'm sorry." She started lamely. "Do...do I know you?" "No." Revenant replied coldly. Over her shoulder he could see Major Kincaid approaching rapidly,
his concern clearly evident. "I..." "I would remember meeting someone like you." Revenant stated. His cool demeanor seemed
to put her off, which was his desired result. "May I go now? You are delaying me from an
important rendezvous." "Yes, I'm sorry. Please..I" He simply turned away, ignoring her attempts at apology. In moments
he had disappeared around the corner and into the crowd of shoppers. Lili stood staring, stunned at the retreating back of the man she'd just run into, unaware she was
trembling slightly. The resemblance had been uncanny. Same build, same eyes but she knew it
was impossible. It was just her imagination working overtime. It had to be. There had been nothing
but the uncomfortable tone of stranger there. But why had she seen a spark of recognition lurking in his eyes? 'How could I have done that? Grab him like that! Way to go Lili.' She sighed to herself, flushing in
remembered embarrassment. 'But, dear God, the resemblance!' "Lili?" Lili jumped at her name being called from behind her. She turned to see Liam standing there,
watching her closely for a moment before his eyes drifted off towards the direction the man had
walked in. "Is everything all right?" He asked, uncertainly. "Yeah. Sure. Why wouldn't it be?" Lili asked, cringing inwardly at how defensive she sounded. Liam obviously heard it too, for he looked at her oddly. He nodded towards the direction the man
had gone. "What was that about?" "Nothing." Lili snapped, suddenly angry. "Sure seems like a lot of fuss over nothing." Liam commented as Lili started to walk by him. "Back off, Liam." Lili shot back over shoulder. Liam quickly caught up to her staring at her
the entire walk back to the doctor. Lili eyed him from the corner of her eye, feeling more
than slightly annoyed at him. "Look, it was just a mistake. He looked like...someone... I knew once. OK?" Lili finally
relented. "My mistake and I'm not too happy about it." "You sure that's it?" Liam asked. He raised his hands in surrender as she shot a
venomous look at him. He frowned slightly at her attitude, truly puzzled. This was the
second time Lili had been come so unnerved in a week. Lili was a rock. Few things
seemed to faze her in his experience. This knowledge of this fact did not make him feel any
better about her sudden behavior as he silently followed her back to the awaiting doctor. Several minutes later Liam and Lili entered the top level of the parking garage where they had
left the shuttle next to Doctor Clark's car. The agent awaiting by the car waved once in
acknowledgment. Three of the four agents with them quickly trotted ahead, fanning out. Lili would
have found the whole thing ridiculous given that the entire top level was empty if it weren't for the
fact that the Doctor's life was at stake. "Seems you were wrong." Doctor Clark stated, a little too hopefully. Clark never really believed
that anyone was trying to kill him. Why bother with an ex-ComTech scientist? "Maybe." Liam allowed. "But everything seemed to indicate you would be the next intended target,
Doctor Clark." "Unless whoever is doing this figured out we had discovered his pattern and did this to throw us
off the trail." Lili commented with some annoyance. "I hope not. Zo'or might decide on more direct means to end this problem." Liam replied. Lili's derisive snort indicated quite clearly her opinion on that subject. Approaching the agent at the
shuttle, she nodded once. "All clear?" "Clear, ma'am. Teams have made sweeps along the perimeter every ten minutes. Nothing." The agent
replied. "Well, let's head back..." Liam started then stopped at an odd humming sound. "What's that?" Clark asked suddenly, pointing to an object as it came over the concrete barrier. It
headed directly for the man rapidly. Lili launched herself at the Doctor, tackling him. She felt more than heard the explosion, as a she and
the doctor were buffeted to the ground. Shards of shrapnel whip past her and the doctor, but Lili was
surprised to find none struck either of them. Her ears ringing she shook her head. She heard a groan and looked over to see the agent she had just
been talking too laying on the ground, his face and chest covered in lacerations. Quickly looking over the
doctor she saw he was unhurt. She scrambled to the injured agent and started to drag him into the shuttle. Her task was made easier as Clark helped her. Once inside she started the emergency transponder and pulled her own pistol as she realized she
could here gunfire on the roof. Glancing out she could see Liam huddled next to the Doctor's now heavily
damaged car with another agent. Beyond them she could see another agent sprawled on the ground
without any apparent blood to indicate an injury. "Come on!" Liam was yelling waving at the two remaining agents near the wall. Both took off towards the
vehicle only to disappear as another explosion engulfed the area, eradicating any trace of the wall. There
was little left to identify the two men. Liam slid back down, horror on his face at what he had witnessed. He looked over to Lili to see a similar
look on her face. But for Lili it wasn't the results of the destructive blast but what had caused it. She only
knew of only a handful of weapons capable of such devastating firepower and that were still relatively small and concealable enough to not be noticeable in a populated area such as this. She was about to call for the others to run for the shuttle when the unmistakable rumble of several shuttles
leaving interdimensional could be heard. In an instant four shuttles were there, two swooping down in the
direction the attack seemed to have originated from, while the other two landed ne
