Lili's Flight
by Ma'ah, the Conflicted Poet<AnseRan@aol.com>
He loved to watch her fly.
Her body gently swaying
Her face full of joy.
The long open sweep of her arm
To culminate in just a tap
Of her fingertip.
He could have called it dancing -
But that would have sent her sputtering her denial
And he would laugh.

She was so different on the ground.
All military bearing and long legged determined strides.
Dark hair swinging against her face
Fire in her eyes and so sure of what she knew was right.
Though once or twice he caught the look of unsurety in those eyes.
The look of a lost and hurt little girl.
But she would recover quick,
Claim it was never there.
But he knew.

He never heard her giggle
And seldom saw her woman pose
They each had a space the other could not fill
The limits they placed were maintained
And privacy was protected.
Still...

The arguments they had!
He was right and she was right!
What? Someone give in?
Concede they were wrong?
NEVER!
A volcano meeting the ocean - billows of steam and smoke.
What a friendship they forged.
One born of grief and fear,
Respect and the need for trust.
He would trust her with his life.
As would she.

A friend
A partner
Competent
Disciplined
Opinionated
Aggravating
Infuriating!

But - he loved to watch her fly!
"We’re approaching Washington, Boo..."
She broke off suddenly
And cast her eyes behind her
To an empty seat
Turned and pressed her lips together tight
And finished the flight
In silence.
